Oh, To be a Pirate
|
Oh, for the
sword And the
open road, And the
clinks of hard won plunder. Perhaps to
be bored, Perhaps to
be gored, Perhaps to
be torn asunder. Away to the
board, And the
buccaneer's code, Ne'er, yet
many a blunder. With perks
ill afford, And yet a
smorgasbord, Amidst the
claps of thunder. Would there
be a lode At the end
of the road, Or would I
simply go under Leave this
impulse ignored? For this
seed I have sowed, I wonder, I wonder, I wonder Copyright ©2003 Sundaram Srinivasan

Writer’s Notes: This poem expresses a pent-up desire to crawl out of the middle class morass and start one's own enterprise. While this thought is alluring, there is a certain amount of fear as well. Instead of directly expressing these thoughts, they have been set metaphorically in the romanticism of "wishing to be a pirate." The parallels are there, many a bounty to be had but fraught with many a challenge as well!
