The following is a set of words that is almost anti-homonymns or homophones. Homonyms/Homophones are words that sound the same but typically are spelt differently. Here is a set that is SPELT the same but sound different depending on their usage. Not having found an official name so far ( I’m sure someone has already given it a name) , I call them “Sundynyms”
1. Bow
- The sailor, standing on the bow1 of the vessel, well versed in archery and knots, put string to his bow2, tied the ends in a neat bow2 and then, amidst applause, took a bow1.
1 = rhymes with how, 2 = rhymes with go.
2. Bower
- One could hear sweet melodies from within the bower1 emanating from the violin of the young bower2 who lived there.
1 =rhymes with tower, cower etc, 2 = rhymes with lower. Sounds exactly like “Boer”.
3. Buffet
- Enduring the buffet1 of many an elbow in the milling crowd, he waited patiently for his turn to fill his plate at the buffet2 .
1 =rhymes with tuffet, Miss Muffet etc and means to strike. 2 = sounds like boo followed by fay ( rhyming with way)
4. Buoy
- Standing on the boat, watching the bright red buoy1 pass by, she wondered what she needed to do to buoy2 up her spirits.
1 = rhymes with phooey, 2 = rhymes with toy
5. Close
- Even though he was very close1 to it, he refused to close2 the window
An example where there is a difference in the pronunciation, but very very slight.
1 =the “ s” is pronounced almost snakelike”ssss”, 2 =the “ s” is pronounced almost sleeplike “zzzz”.
6. Deliberate
- The board’s decision to deliberate1 the issue of funding for at least 3 days was a deliberate2 one as they wanted to be sure that they had covered all possibilities.
1 = Long “a” sound…the “ rate” rhymes with “ hate” , 2 = very short “a” sound, almost a “e”as if the word was spelt “ deliberet”.
7.. Desert
It looked like there was no option left but to desert1 his brave man in the desert2.
1 = rhymes with dessert , 2 = rhymes with “ lass hurt” .
8. Does
- Does1 anyone know why the does2 fled back into the jungle?
1 = rhymes with “ cuz”. 2 = rhymes with nose.
9. Dove
- The eagle dove1 and pounced on the dove2.
1 = rhymes with grove, 2 = rhymes with love.
10. Entrance
- From the moment the dancer made her entrance1 , she did nothing but entrance2 the audience for the next hour.
1 =the “ a” is subdued and almost sounds like an “uh””, 2 =the “ a” is nice and long , almost an aaa .
11. House
- Even though his house1 was small, he offered to house2 the visitors at home.
Another example where there is a difference in the pronunciation, but very very slight.
1 =the “ s” is pronounced almost snakelike”ssss”, 2 =the “ s” is pronounced almost sleeplike “zzzz”.
12. Housewife
- An excellent seamstress, the housewife1 had a very special housewife2 to keep her special needles for stitching.
The first housewife is, of course, a common word. The second, a much rarer word form old English, which is pronounced “huzzif” means a box to keep needles etc..
1 =The house rhymes with” louse” and the wife rhymes with “strife” JJ 2 =the house is pronounced “ huzz” and the wife is said exactly like the word “ if”.
13. Initimate
- Due to the fact that they were very intimate1 , she was wondering how best to intimate2 him without causing a major problem.
1 = the “ a” is extremely soft, almost silent, 2 = rhymes with hate. The “ a” is very strong.
14. Invalid
- The hanging chad made the vote of the invalid1 invalid2.
1 =the “ a” is very soft almost silent but not quite, sounds like the “u” in but. 2 = rhymes with pallid.
15. Lead
- Although his heart felt heavy with lead1, he was born to lead2 and he led from the front..
1 = rhymes with bed. 2 = rhymes with greed.
16. Live
- Even if he was not going to live1 another day, he was not going to miss the live2 show.
1 = rhymes with give, 2 = rhymes with jive.
17. Mare
- The cowboy, riding his mare1 , stopped, looked up at the moon and wondered what the mare2 was really made of.
1 =rhymes with hair, flair etc, 2 = pronounced “MAHR/aay ”and is an interesting word meaning any of several mostly flat dark areas of considerable extent on the surface of the moon or Mars
18. Minute
- Even though he was busy and hardly had a minute1 to spare, he carefully examined every minute2 detail of the proposal.
1 =There is no “ u” sound at all. Sounds like “minn it” 2 = sounds exactly like “ My newt”, a strong accent on the “u”.
19. Object
- He wanted to object1 to the object2 being placed on the pedestal.
( The difference in sounds is very very slight and the reader may actually object1 to this being a sundynymn.JJ)
1 = the “ ob” sounds the “ub” in the word subject., 2 = the “ ob” sounds like the “ ob” in the word rob..
20. Perfect
I wanted to perfect1 every detail of the presentation as I wanted the talk to be perfect 2 .
This one is really really subtle and you have to concentrate to see the difference.1 = the emphasis is on the “ f” and the front teeth really engage with the top of the lower lip when saying the word
2 the emphasis is on the first PURR and when one says the FECT the upper teeth just very very lightly glance against the lower lip.
21. Present
- He was called up on the stage to present1 a discourse to the audience on present2 day economics.
1 = rhymes with resent, 2 = rhymes with pleasant.
22. Produce
- What does a farm produce1?,
Quite simple, produce2
1 = rhymes with seduce, 2 = rhymes with “broad use”
23. Project
- The project1 team decided to project2 the data on a large screen to better understand all the elements.
1 =the “pro” rhymes with awe 2 = the “ pro” rhymes with go.
24. Putting
Putting1 putting2 at the top of his agenda, the golfer improved his handicap.
1 =the put has the same sound as the word put, 2 = the put rhymes with but.
25. Read
- Having nothing new to read1 , he read 2 the newspaper again.
1 = rhymes with greed, 2 = rhymes with bed.
26. Resume
- After a brief 30 minute nap, he decided to resume1 updating his resume2 .
1 =rhymes with presume 2 = pronounced “ res you may”.
27. Record
Since you have told me that you will record1 the conversation I would like it to go on record2 that I am all for peace in the world.
1 =pronounced ” rae-Kord” with the second “ r” clearly enunciated and almost as if there is an a between the first r and e. 2 = pronounced “ re-cud” ..sharp on both syllables and the second “ r” almost silent.
28. Row
- The students standing in a row1 started arguing and a terrible row2 ensued.
1 = rhymes with go, 2 = rhymes with how
29. Second
- Tom was the second1 person that Jim was able to second2 to his sister organization.
1 =sounds like” sec..und”, 2 = strong sound on the “o”. The “ sec” is the same but the “ond” rhymes with bond.
30. Sow
- The farmer, his bull and his sow1 walked the fields, ready to sow2 the new seed.
1 = rhymes with how, 2 = rhymes with go.
31. Sewer
- The rain poured off the clothes sewn by the town’s famous sewer1 and ran off down the gutter and into the sewer2 on the street.
1 = rhymes with”Noah”, 2 = sounds almost like “sue her”..with the “h” silent...
32. Tear
- With a tear1 in her eye, she proceeded to tear2 up the contract.
1 = rhymes with fear, 2 = rhymes with hair.
33. The
- This is the1 easy part of the2 sentence.
1 =rhymes with he usually whenever there is a word with a vowel following. 2 = rhymes with “duh”.
34. Use
In order to maximize the benefits from the use1 of high technology gadgets, one needs to use2 them often.
1 =the "s" is pronounced almost snake-like ssss, 2 =the "s"is pronounced almost sleeplike zzzz.
35. Wind
- It was time to wind1 up, the wind2 was too strong for any further attempts at lighting the match.
1 = rhymes with mind, 2 = rhymes with rescind.
36. Wont
- He wont1 apply his knowledge of history at the office although he is wont2 to do this at every personal opportunity.
1 =rhymes with “ don’t” 2 = same sound as the word “ want”.
37. Wound
- Due to the wound1 on his right hand, he wound2 the clock with his left.
1 = rhymes with swooned, 2 = rhymes with found.

The following are also “ Sundynyms” but slight cheating as some Proper nouns were used and some are, strictly speaking, foreign words. However, they were fun in the discovery process and have been included.
1. Male :
- Not a single male1 could be spotted in Male2 , the capital of the Maldives, during the annual women’s convention.
1 = rhymes with hail, 2 = rhymes with parley.
2. Pate
- The bald, fat man rubbed his palm over his bald pate1 and ruminated over all that pate2 he had just consumed.
1 = rhymes with hate, 2 = rhymes with latte.
3. Polish
- The Polish1 furniture needed a lot of polish2 before it blended with the other chairs in the room.
1 =pronounced ” pole--ish” 2 = pronounced “ Paul—ish”.
